He filled the vacant spot left by Madrid bound David Beckham when he signed for Manchester United in 2003 – but it would seem the similarities between the two footballers don't stop there.
Indeed, the Portuguese winger has enjoyed a career comparable to the the former England skipper, having followed him to the Bernabeu – albeit two-years after Beckham swapped Spain for Southern California and Los Angeles Galaxy.
Like Becks, the moisturized midfielder has also developed separate interests away from the pitch – and he was on hand to launch his latest at Madrid’s Palacio de Cibeles on Thursday.
The player's eyes and tongue had been cut out and his head placed inside one of his own rucksacks, police said. Mr Santos retired from football two years ago after a successful career playing for several teams in Rio de Janeiro, as well as for clubs in Sweden and Honduras.
He had recently set up his own business selling health foods and dietary supplements.

The in-form Atletico Madrid striker has attracted the attention of the world champions but having featured previously for Brazil, should he be able to change allegiance?
The footballer everyone is talking about in Spain and Brazil right now is Atletico Madrid star Diego Costa. The 25-year-old striker - who has been arguably the best player in La Liga this season, topping the Pichichi standings with 10 goals in eight games - caused a storm last week when he pledged his allegiance to the World Cup holders.
Despite representing Brazil earlier this year in friendlies against Italy and Russia, Costa is eligible to switch nations as he has lived in Spain for more than five years and has not played a competitive game for the land of his birth.
But are the rules, which Selecao coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has branded "backward", fair? Goal's Carlo Garganese and Paul Macdonald go head-to-head over this contentious issue.
