Gen Minimah brings boxing back to life

Following the not too impressive performances of Nigeria’s boxing team in recent past, President of the Nigeria Boxing Federation, NBF, Major General Kenneth Minimah has moved to assist the federation discover more talents who would be exposed to competitive conditions towards representing the country and wining laurels in future competitions.


He has therefore, in the absence of funds from the National Sports Commission, NSC, decided to sponsor a National Open Boxing Championship to hold in Lagos from August 16 to 24 to be attended by boxers from the 36 States of the federation and Abuja as well as the Armed Forces and Para-Military Boxing Clubs.

Addressing the media in Lagos on the championships, the NBF president, who was represented by Mr Ogbu Osondu, a.k.a Old Skool with Azania Omo-Agege, another member of the NBF Board present, said the event will also serve as an avenue to select boxers who will represent the country in some forthcoming international competitions.

Some of the competitions, they said, include the 18th African Elite Boxing Championship in Mauritius, AIBA Youth Women Boxing Championship in Belgium, AIBA World Boxing Championship in Kazakhstan and the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

According to General Minimah, the 9-day championship will have boxers competiting in various categories: Men, 49kg, 52kg, 56kg, 60kg, 64kg, 69kg, 75kg, 81kg, 91kg and +91kg while the women will compete in the 56kg, 60kg and 75kg, all Olympic weight categories.

The NBF president added that the federation will organise a 3-day referee/judge proficiency upgrade workshop August 13-15 to keep them abreast with the new AIBA rules and regulations which will be applied at the championship.

“The workshop is aimed at upgrading the knowledge of Nigerian referees and judges on the new AIBA rules and regulations, especially the 10-point scoring system recently approved by the world boxing ruling body,” he said as he urged “all active referees/judges to participate in the woerkshop.”
