The Federal College of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (FEDCAM) in Isheri-Olofin, Lagos is not an illegal School.
This was contained in a statement issued in Lagos, yesterday, by the National Association of Physicians and Complementary Alternative Medicine (NACAPAM) and signed by the provost of the college, Dr. Idowu Ogunkoya.
NACAPAM insists, therefore, that the Medicine and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has no reason whatsoever to close down the college.
The college was reportedly closed down last weekend by the HOD Inspectorate of MDCN, Dr. Henry Okwuokenye, alleging that Dr. Ogunkoya had no practice license to act as the provost and that there was no accreditation of faculty and curriculum of training for the school.
But reacting to the abrupt closure of the college, FEDCAM said that Dr. Okwuokenye was informed about the school’s operations, activities and purpose.
NACAPAM said: “The Federal College of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (FEDCAM), was set up for the purpose of training people for traditional and natural medicine and not to award degrees or doctorate degrees.”
Originally, the college started as National College for Natural Medicine, teaching mostly herbal medicine. Thereafter, the Federal Ministry of Health took it over and remained it Federal College of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Lagos and appointed a registrar for it.
The Federal Ministry of Health also later established another one at Abuja. At no time did the Medicine and Dental Council or the Federal Ministry of Health queried the existence of the college. Therefore, the assertion that the school was a fake medical school was wrong and unfounded.”
The NACAPAM protested that the MDCN, came to the college to harass and arrest the people who were exercising their constitutional right to impact and acquire knowledge and urged the HOD inspectorate of MDCN to make amend.
