News: My endorsement by 20 LGs, successful coup –Amosun

Ogun State governor, Ibikunle Amosun, has described his endorsement for second term by the 20 Local Government Chairmen of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the state as a ‘successful coup’ executed by the party leaders.

Chairmen of ACN in all the 20 Local Government Areas of the state had, after a meeting, on Monday, endorsed the governor for adoption as the party’s candidate for a second term in office.

They hinged their decision on the sterling performance of the governor in the area of security, infrastructural development, health, education, employment and agriculture since he assumed office 27 months ago.

The chairmen came to present their resolution to the governor in his office on Wednesday.

Amosun, while receiving the party leaders, described the move as a surprise as he was alerted of the development by a friend, who saw the news on one of the national television stations.

According to him, “I must tell you this is a surprise to me. It was a friend that called me to alert me about a news item on a television station. I later saw it myself and I was surprised.

“I had to call the party chairman, who told me he was aware and that the chairmen were
expressing their fundamental right and they are indicating their choice.

“I just laughed because, like I told some people, it was like a coup. There are many types of coup, but this one is successful.

“But for me, the adoption is another call for service. It is a call on me not to relent on my oars and work even more.
“As the leaders of the party in power, it is incumbent on us to ensure that the people that elected us here see us as working.

“They should know that there is a clear difference between us and the people that were here before,” the governor noted.
He added that he was particularly thrilled by the party leaders’ action because he was variously accused of not playing politics enough, adding “for our leaders to come up with a resolution like this, is an indication that what we are doing is gradually showing and people are appreciating it.”

Amosun charged the party leaders to educate their members at the grassroots on the importance of the policies of the state government.

He also tasked journalists operating in the state to attempt a comparative analysis of issues in the state between the administration and previous ones.

According to him, “some of you journalists have been around for over 10 years and you saw what was on the ground and what is happening now.

”You should be able to tell the people what you see objectively. My intention is to restore nightlife in Ogun State and reverse the situation where people run in after 9pm due to insecurity.

“We are not there yet but we are getting there soon.”

Chairman of ACN in Ogun State, Tajudeen Bello, who was part of the visiting team, had earlier told the governor to listen to the opinion of the party leaders.
