The Police yesterday charged Jeff Momoh in an Abuja Grade 2 Area Court in Kado with inciting public disturbance.
The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Simeon Ibrahim, told the court that on June 19, Cpl. Mankput Norbert of the Nigerian Police Force attached to the Utako Market Police Outstation, Abuja, brought the matter to Utako Police Station.
He said that Norbert reported that on the same day, he arrested and brought Momoh, a trader in Utako Market, to the police station.
Ibrahim said Momoh used a megaphone to incite traders in the market by telling them to come out and protest the arrest of their president and members of the executive of Utako Shop Owners and Traders Association.
The prosecutor said the president and his executive members were arrested in the morning of the same day Momoh was arrested.
Ibrahim said the offence contravened Section 114 of the Penal Code, which prescribes a two-year imprisonment term or fine, or both for an offender.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the offence, adding that he was campaigning for a just cause.
The counsel to the accused, Mr Chuks Mpama, told the court that “the accused is also an executive member of the Utako Shop Owners/Traders Association, Abuja. As a matter of fact, he is the PRO 1”.
The Presiding Officer, Mr Ahmed Ado, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N50,000 and a reliable surety.
Ado adjourned the case to Aug. 18 for further hearing.
