A former member of the House of Representatives and executive secretary of Anti-corruption Network, Hon Dino Melaye, has described the government of President Goodluck Jonathan as the most corrupt in the history of the country.
Speaking with LEADERSHIP in Abuja yesterday, he said under the leadership of President Jonathan, corruption has graduated from the era of when government officials were stealing millions and billions of naira to trillions of naira, warning that the country is doomed if the trend is not halted. “For the first time in the history of this country, corruption has graduated from the stealing of millions, billions and today into trillions,” he said. “The government of President Goodluck Jonathan is yet to prosecute one corrupt official; not one politically exposed person has been jailed under Jonathan’s administration,” he added.
He said that corruption is thriving because there is total lack of political will to fight the monster by the presidency. Melaye said the situation would continue as long as the power to appoint the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) chairman reside with the president and called for constitutional amendment that will take the power to appoint the chairman of the anti-graft agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman to the National Judicial Council (NJC).
The former lawmaker who revealed that his organisation, the Anti-corruption Network, has established anti-corruption clubs in 17 universities to educate the young ones on the dangers of corruption, berated the federal government for not doing enough to prosecute those indicted for the fuel subsidy scam.
He lamented that some of the companies indicted by the fuel subsidy scam have allegedly been given licence to import fuel into the country saying that this action of government speaks volume on its position on the fight against corruption. Melaye was also miffed that not one single government official has been prosecuted over the fuel subsidy scam noting that the marketers who are presently being prosecuted were allegedly aided and abated by government officials in the ministry of petroleum resources, ministry of finance and the Central Bank of Nigeria yet nothing has been done to prosecute such officials.
