Police Arraign 6 Suspected Indian Hemp Smokers

No fewer than six Indian hemp smokers were on Wednesday arraigned at a magistrate’s court in the State of Osun, sitting in Osogbo.

The suspects were: Adedeji Femi (31); Tosin Olugbode (28); Adeleke Sulaiman (17); Sodiq Oseni (21); Kehinde Sodiq (24) and Afolabi Akeem (22).

Police prosecutor, Inspector Isiaka Ajadi, stated that the accused persons were arrested by policemen at different Indian hemp joints in Osogbo, where they were allegedly caught smoking Indian hemp.

Ajadi informed the court that Femi, Olugbode, Sulaiman and Oseni committed the alleged offence on August 5, 2013 at about 9.00 pm at an Indian hemp joint around Old Garage area of Osogbo, the state capital.

Ajadi further explained that Sodiq and other suspects believed to be currently at large were caught at the aforementioned joint, while Akeem, the sixth accused person, was arrested at a black spot at Gbonmi area, also in the state capital.

The prosecutor maintained that the alleged offence committed by the accused persons contravened Section 509 of the Criminal Code Cap 34, Vol. 11, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2003.

However, the accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Defence counsel, led by Mrs Nnena Ngwu, however applied for the bail of the accused persons in the most liberal terms, saying that the suspects were ready to stand trial.

Ruling on the matter, the presiding magistrate, Mr Olusola Aluko, granted bail to the accused persons in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties each.

Aluko later adjourned the case till September 6, 2013 for mention.
