The Plateau State commandant of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mrs Ngozi Madubuike, has disclosed that over 185 suspects have been arrested for drug offences in the state this year.
According to her, 77 of those arrested had already been convicted while over 1320 kilogrammes of different types of illicit drugs had been seized from the suspects.
The commandant who made the disclosure in Jos yesterday while speaking with newsmen said that the agency had received permission from the court to publicly destroy the drugs, which she said the agency would soon carry out.
Mrs Madubuike noted that the drug rehabilitation centre under the agency had also admitted 85 addicts, while 40 of them had been treated and discharged.
According to her the agency is presently upgrading its rehabilitation centre to meet modern standards.
She identified peer pressure and broken homes as some of the reasons why the youth engage in drug abuse, stressing that drug abuse is not restricted to religion, class or status.
Madubuike noted that although Plateau State is not a cannabis producing state, it has a high consumption rate but expressed fear that people might begin to produce it.
She mentioned lack of cooperation from communities in exposing drug dealers and funding as some of the challenges facing the agency and called on parents to monitor the activities of their children and wards.
The commandant who lamented the high rate of the use of psycho tropic substances amongst the youths in the state, blamed it on the non existence of laws guiding the sales of some drugs such as cough syrups containing codeine.
