THE Borno State Government on Wednesday appealed to the Federal Government to improve the welfare of officers of the Nigeria Police Force to enable them fight crime.
Alhaji Zanna Mustapha, the Deputy Governor made the appeal, while receiving the new Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Zone 12, Mr. Edgar Nanakumo in his office in Maiduguri.
He stressed that government must strive hard to improve on the welfare of the members of the police force to motivate them for better performance.
Mustapha observed that in other countries, the police were well paid and respected.
He noted, however, that in Nigeria, the reverse was the case, yet they perform better in terms of fighting crime.
Mustapha urged the government to equip the police with modern arms and to enable it fight increased crime rate in the society.
He also called on government to recruit more police officers in view of the recent increase in crime rate in the country.
He commended the Borno State Command for living up to the expectation, especially in fighting the Boko Haram insurgency.
Earlier, Nanakumo said his visit was to enable him get firsthand information on the conditions of officers serving in the state.
He commended the state government for its supports for the police.
