Four people who allegedly robbed the Mamprobi Guinness Depot a fortnight ago have been arrested by the police.
The arrested suspects included three workers of the depot, namely Emmanuel Laryea, 32, a sales assistant of the company, Nicholas Nortey, 25, and 48-year-old Stephen Anorful who sought the assistance of a scrap dealer, Hafiz Ali alias ‘send the money’.
DCOP Christain Teeth Yohuno, Accra Regional Commander, briefing the press on Sunday, said the police received a distress call at about 4:00pm on July 18, 2013, that armed robbers had attacked the depot and robed the staff of their valuables at gunpoint.
“Police acted swiftly and proceeded to the scene but on arrival, the armed robbers had fled,” he said, adding that during investigations accusing fingers were pointed at Hafiz Ali, 27, a scrap dealer and four others.
He said suspect Hafiz and his accomplices used two unregistered motorbikes when they went to the premises of the company while workers were busily working.
The Accra Police Commander said the five armed men, on arrival, ordered all the workers to lie down, which they complied and started looting.
“During this period, suspect Emmanuel Laryea, aged 32, a sales assistant of the company led two of the armed men into the main office and collected cash in the sum of GH¢700.00 from the accountant and also took away his Dell laptop and Airtel modem.”
The robbers, DCOP Yohuno said, further proceeded to the manager’s office where they took cash of GH¢2,000.00 from a drawer amidst warning shots.
The manager’s handbag which contained cash of GH¢1,710 was also taken away.
The Police Commander told journalists that during the robbery, a 66-year-old watchman by name Daniel Mills was shot when he refused to obey an order by the robbers to lie down.
After the robbery operation and when the robbers had fled the scene on their motorbikes, the injured watchman was rushed to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for treatment, but died later.
He said “after the Mamprobi Guinness Depot robbery, these robbers were not satisfied with their booty; they proceeded to Bortianor to rob Petrol Bay filling station of cash of GH¢2,000.”
Police investigation revealed that suspect Emmanuel Laryea, a worker of the Guinness depot was an accomplice of the robbery.
“He was arrested and during investigations, he confessed that, he and his other colleagues at the workplace planned the robbery because of low salary.”
Nicholas and Stephen were consequently arrested while suspect Hafiz mentioned his accomplices on the run as Muntari, Jelil, Daddy, Musah, and Zoobi.
The arrested suspects, according to the Accra commander, would be put before court soon.
