Coach seeks NSC’s support for Deaf Sport

The Head of Track and Field West Africa Deaf Union (WADU), Adegboyega Adenuga, on Wednesday appealed to the National Sports Commission (NSC) to support the Nigeria Deaf Sports Federation (NDSF) to organise local competitions.

Adenuga  in Lagos said  that the federation needed resources to enable it to keep athletes fit.

“The body has programmes lined up, but in most cases, the programmes are not executed as a result of lack of funds. I am appealing to the NSC for support.

“We need to engage the athletes by ensuring that competitions are held across the country regularly.

“It is the only way to assist the athletes to develop their skills,’’ Adenuga, who is also the NDSF athletics coach, said.
He told NAN that local competitions would serve as a build-up for international competitions, stressing that the West African body had series of competitions annually.

“We don’t have to wait for an international competition to come up before we commence preparation. It is necessary to be ready at all times,’’ he said.

Adenuga said that he was impressed with the level of commitment shown by the athletes during training at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

“I am encouraged by their large number and the commitment they exhibit. It gives me joy; it is an indication that the future of the sport is bright,’’ he added.

According to him, it is important to win medals in competitions, but emphasis should be experience that comes through regular participation.
