A deluge of commendations poured in on Thursday from governors, political parties, National Assembly members and party leaders for the Independent National Electoral Commission and President Goodluck Jonathan for the registration of the All Progressives Congress.
While commending INEC for its bold step of registering the party, Jonathan was praised for allowing the process to sail through.
The governors, who commended the APC registration, include governors Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun); Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo); and Adams Oshiomhole Edo State; respectively; Senators and members of the House of Representatives; party leaders, including a former presidential candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau; and the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties, among others.
A former presidential candidate of the All Nigeria People’s Party, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau and the Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima said the APC would provide Nigerians the alternative they had always yearned for.
Shekarau said the party would make a difference.
Shettima, on his part, said, while celebrating the registration of the new party, leaders and members must bear it in mind that Nigerians have very expectations.
Ajimobi described the registration of APC by INEC as a succour to Nigeria’s political clan.
He said, “With the registration of APC, history had been made. It is the first merger to be midwifed in the annals of political parties in Nigeria”.
Amosun said the registration of the party by INEC was a formal endorsement of the objectives of the new party: to bring about positive changes in the standards of living of Nigerians.
He described the registration as a sign that democracy had come of age in Nigeria with the emergence of “broad-based, viable and credible alternative to the ruling People’s Democratic Party at the centre.”
Oshiomhole described the registration of the APC as good news for all Nigerians.
He said the registration had also succeeded in enhancing the credibility of INEC in the eyes of Nigerians.
The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties also hailed President Goodluck Jonathan for not interfering with the registration of the party.
The Chairman of the CNPP in Ekiti State, Mr. Tunji Ogunlola, said this in an interview with our correspondent in Ado Ekiti on Thursday.
Ogunlola also hailed the electoral commission for being impartial, saying the registration of the political party formed by the merger of the opposition parties had shown that INEC was not partial.
Similarly, federal lawmakers from Edo State, including the Senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, Senator Domingo Obende; Minority Whip, House of Representatives, Mr. Samson Osagie; and former Secretary to the State Government and lawmaker representing Owan Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, Pally Iriase, commended INEC for the registration of the party.
The lawmakers in different reactions also commended leaders of the now defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, All Nigeria Peoples Party, Congress for Progressive Change and faction of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, for tenacity in ensuring the registration of the new party.
