Personnel of the Anti Armed Robbery Squad Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have arrested 16 suspected armed robbers believed to be terrorizing residents at five locations in Accra.

The suspected robbers comprising eight men and eight women were arrested in a swoop carried out between 5:00am and 4:00pm on Saturday August 3, 2013.

Superintendent Wonder Dogbevia, Commander of the Anti Armed Robbery Squad Unit at the CID headquarters told DAILY GUIDE that the operatives stormed places which had been identified as dens for robbers in Accra following police investigations in response to recent outcry over the increasing crime and robbery rates in the country.

He stated that the unannounced swoops would continue and that the first areas where the suspects were picked up included New Fadama, New Town, Kokomba Market, Nima and Awudome, all in Accra.

The suspects who were aged between 17 and 35 included Daniel Botwey, Baba Taafa, Kwabena Bosompim, Kwesi Boakye, Evans Anane, Nii Amponsah, Emmanuel Ofori and Fred Frimpong.

Four out of the eight ladies who were picked up were Nigerians, namely Takwa Veronica, 17, Philis Lawreter Erei, 25, Cynthia Joseph, 22, and Angelina Okoh, 22.

Their Ghanaian counterparts were Jenifer Amenyo, 27, Beta Osei, 26, Sandra Darko, 27 and 26-year-old Rahinatu Mohammed.

Superintendent Dogbevia said after questioning the suspects, their photographs and fingerprints were taken for profiling purposes to establish “if they have any criminal record”.

As at press time, the suspects had been released on police enquiry bail but the Commander of the Anti Armed Robbery Unit said “it is intended to let them assist the police with investigations. We will be monitoring their activities.”

He said “we will continue with the swoops until we wipe out suspected armed robbers who are hiding in communities,” and assured the public that the police were in control “so they can go about their normal businesses freely without fear”.

The Anti Armed Robbery Commander appealed to members of the public with information on the hideouts of suspected armed robbers to offer such information and assist the police in bringing miscreants to book.
