The vice-chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Abdul Ganiyu Ambali, yesterday recommended dialogue as the panacea to the lingering crisis between the federal government members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) .
The university teachers are currently on strike to press home their demand for the implementation of the agreement their union reached with government in 2001.
Though his institution, University of Ilorin, Kwara State, is not participating in the strike, Ambali urged the feuding parties to return to the negotiable table to amicably resolve the issues at stake.
Ambali spoke in Ilorin during an iftar - the break of fast - with journalists .
He harped on the need for the two parties to reach compromise and find quick resolution to the crisis.
He said, “Where two parties are fighting, nobody will be 100 per cent right. I just want to urge the two parties to understand each other and come to conclusion so that students can continue their study in peace”.
The vice-chancellor also disclosed that scientists in the university were currently working on alternative sources of power supply from the university’s dam, as well as solar and waste.
He said when the process is completed, it would be transmitted to commercial use as a source of revenue generation by the university.
He said the university administration has been trying its best to bridge the gap between the town and gown by tailoring its activities towards meeting the needs of its immediate community.
