News: Five killed as building collapses in Lagos


Five persons, including a woman were Sunday, July 21, killed in Surulere area of  Lagos, when a three storey building under construction collapsed leaving five others with severe injuries.


Vanguard gathered that the building located  at  No. 26 Ishaga Road, off Itire Road, Surulere, caved in around 10 am when it started to rain.

Eyewitnesses told this reporter that some of  the victims were passersby who had gone into the building for cover when the  rain stated, while others were people working at the building site. An eyewitness who identified himself as Abiodun Lasisi said the female victim was a bread vendor who was in the building to sell bread.

The construction started in January this year and it has been going on until Sunday when it caved in.  Lasisi said “I was on my way to Ojuelegba where I work when it started to rain. I ran into a building not too far away from the building that collapsed. Few minute later, I heard a loud sound; the building under construction had collapsed. People rushed out of their houses and calls were quickly made to the Lagos State emergency service for help. ” he added.
