OFFICERS and men of the 4th Brigade, Nigerian Army Benin City, yesterday, paraded 19 suspected oil thieves and robbers including a Police Inspector, Nanagha Aduomeni, attached to A Department of the Police Division, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
Among the suspects were five kidnappers who collected N1.5 million from their victim in Warri, Delta State, before they were arrested by the army while trying to sell a Nissan Primera Saloon car with number plate LAGOS PJ 339 AAA, which was used for kidnapping.
Parading the suspects, at the 4 Brigade, Benin City, Captain Roselyn Managbe, Army Public Relations Officer, said it was part of the operation code named PULO SHIELD, put together by the Commander of the Brigade, Brig-Gen.Pat Akem, with a view to crush economic saboteurs and other criminal elements operating in the Niger Delta.
According to her, “in our effort to check the excesses of the oil thieves, our men intercepted a tipper truck loaded with 15 drums of substance suspected to be illegally refined AGO at Aladja, Delta State.
“The operation led to the arrest of five persons. They confessed and took the monitoring team to the habour market and Tanker Garage in Warri metropolis where a total of 1,500 drums of substance suspected to be illegally refined AGO were discovered and consequently destroyed.”
On the gang of robbers which included the Police inspector, she said “he and members of his gang were caught blocking the road with woods while other members of his gang who were armed took cover in the thick forest along the road. When they sighted the army, Inspector Nanagha tried to withdraw into the bush, but was caught while other members of the gang escaped into the creeks.”
Inspector Nanagha who spoke to journalists, confessed to the crime, disclosing that “in Bayelsa most police officers indulge in robbery. I have two children and a wife I am very sorry for them. I had to remove my uniform to go for the operation. I was called upon to go by a colleague police officer. Some of us indulge in such act on the roads”.
