An investigation has been launched after a woman turned up alive… 13 days after her funeral.
A memorial for Sharolyn Jackson was held on August 9 after her body was identified and the Philadelphia Medical Examiner signed her death certificate.
But her family were delighted when it emerged she had checked in at a mental health facility in the city almost two weeks later.
Philadelphia authorities are trying to establish who is buried in the grave thought to belong to Ms Jackson.
Ms Jackson’s mother, Carrie Minney, said the woman in the casket looked just like her daughter – except for the nose.
She said the family had assumed something had happened to her nose during the embalming process.
Officials know the body is that of a woman found dead from natural causes in West Philadelphia on July 20.
A Philadelphia Health Department spokesman told KYW-TV all proper procedures were followed by workers and, with two people, including a family member, identifying a picture of her, it was following protocol to release the body.
The spokesman said city officials are expected to seek an order to exhume the unknown body so steps can be taken to identify her.
