Traffic Warden Commits Suicide In Rivers

A traffic warden, identified as Victor Memawaji allegedly committed suicide on Wednesday morning in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Sources said the late Memawaji who was attached to the Borokiri Division of the Police command was about 28 years old.

The course of his action could not be ascertained at press time, but it was learnt that he lost his new born baby (first child) a forth-night ago and had remained sad ever since, before he took his life.

Sources in Borikiri area where the incident occurred said that the late Memawaji tied a rope from the ceiling fan in his apartment to his neck, but neighbours could notice what was happening he was already dead.

The deceased wife, Mrs Memawaji told journalists that she could not understand why her late husband chose to end his life the way he did, adding that they lived happily until his death.

She said; “We took our bath together after he returned home from afternoon shift at about 9:00 pm. My brother-in-law visited and after he left, we had our night meal.

“When we were about to sleep, my husband said he would visit his brother, who had just left, at his own house, and after he would go to church service.

“I do not attend the same church with my husband, and I suggested that I would pass the night in my friend’s place. We recently lost our new born baby and first child. Staying alone in the house would bring back memories of my late baby.”

The wife said the late husband later saw her off to her friend’s place where she passed the night.

“We had lived happily. We never had any quarrel that would have led him to commit suicide. He did not drop any note for me. When I came back in the morning, the door was locked. We broke the house and found him hanging on the fan,” she said.
