The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit Zone A, Ikeja, has confiscated 120 cartons of frozen poultry products.
According to the unit, the contraband was concealed with some cartons of frozen fish. It added that a suspect was also arrested.
The Comptroller, FOU A, Mahmud Nuhu, said on Monday that the seizure happened at 4pm on Saturday on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The customs officer said, “The seizure was effected at about 1600hrs of Saturday August 17, 2013 along Lagos-Ibadan expressway. The customs officials were actually acting on a tip off and were on the trail of the consignment till it got to that point.
“This seizure underscores the desperation of smugglers who are bent on circumventing Federal Government policy on trade.
“The 10-tyre truck, with registration no PHC 653 XA, was laden with over 1200 cartons of imported poultry products. It was packaged in such a manner to contravene the laws and deceive my officers.
“The poultry products were concealed with cartons of frozen fish.”
Nuhu said the unit was determined to remain the flagship of anti-smuggling in the country by continually making its terrain a no go area for smugglers.
He said, “The Unit will continue to live up to acceptable standards in terms of our statutory responsibility of suppressing smuggling.
“This is just a tip of an iceberg as we have plans to wreak more havoc on these smugglers.”
