THE Enogie of Evbuovbioba community in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, Edwin Izevbokun, and one of his subjects, Matthew Iyoha, have petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Muhammed Abubakar, over their alleged illegal arrest and dentention by police officers from the Homicide Section of the Nigeria Police Headquarters, Abuja.
They were alleged to have been arrested over allegation that they were preventing the leaders of the Community Development Association, from taking over the running of the community.
In the petition through their counsel, Afolabi Olayiwola, the petitioners claimed that the matter of who should take over the running of the affairs of the community was already before an Edo State High Court for adjudication, noting that their arrest by the police from Abuja was illegal.
Insisting that the self-acclaimed chairman of the Community Development Association, who brought the policemen from the Homicide Section of the Force Headquarters, Abuja, was using the police to stall the matter already in the court, the petitioners pleaded with the Inspector General to look into the conduct of the police officers from Abuja, who were being used to harass and intimidate them.
“We were shocked when Lucky Enababor brought police officers from the Federal Homicide, Abuja, to arrest the suspects on the ground that they were threatening him and his executive from taking over the affairs of the community when the matter is already in court to his knowledge.
“Mr. Iyoha was arrested on August 6, as he was going out in his car and thinking that the people were kidnappers, he abandoned his car and went to Evbuotubu Police Station and it was there the policemen from Abuja arrested him.
“The case of the second suspect, HRH Edwin Izevbokun was so pathetic as he is over 70 years with a failing health and we don’t want him to die in Police custody in Abuja,” the petition said.
“This is not the first time Lucky Enababor is using the Police to harass members of the community as he had tried to use the Edo State Police Command to harass members of the community and we forwarded a petition to the Commissioner of Police, Edo State. We also informed the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 5, about the illegal act.”
