Nelson Mandela’s ex-wife Winnie Mandela will be getting a film for the first time ever, slated for release on September 6.
Jennifer Hudson’s will play the leading role of Winnie Mandela while Terrence Howard will play Nelson Mandela. The movie revolves around the life of the political activist as she grows up in South Africa, marries Mandela, and campaigns for his release from prison.
The audience will get to watch Winnie as she faces continuous harassment by the security police, is banished to a small Free State town, is betrayal by friends and allies, and then spends a year in solitary confinement.
The film will capture her activism against apartheid, infidelity and divorce, plus her fall from grace amid accusations of violence and murder. And just like Winnie’s life, the film has attracted controversy. Winnie Mandela criticised the fact that she was not consulted for the making of the film about her life yet she is still alive. Some South African actors have also criticised the selection of American actors for South African roles. The official trailer is currently available online.
