MASSOB leader, 3 others arrested

Fifty-two year-old coordinator of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Anioma/Ndokwa East region of Delta State, Emeka Okafor was on Wednesday arrested by operatives of the state police command, allegedly for chanting war songs.

Three other members of the movement were also arrested with Okafor at a location in Omini-Ugboma community, near the Bridge Head in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

The Delta State Police Command spokesman, ASP Lucky Uyabeme, while confirming the arrest late Wednesday evening, said the Command acted on a tip-off to effect the arrest of the MASSOB members.

Uyabame who confirmed that Okafor was their leader, also disclosed that six Biafran flags were recovered from the suspects, just as he added that they were chanting war songs when they were arrested.

“Four members of MASSOB were apprehended at Omini-Ugboma near the Bridgehead chanting war songs. The police are currently investigating the suspects to ascertain the motives behind their congregating at the location where they were arrested,” Uyabeme stated.

He however debunked rumours in some quarters that seven members of MASSOB had died in the hands of security operatives, explaining that the rumours gained grounds due to the “fact that family members of the suspects have not been notified.”
