Massive turn out to welcome PDP governorship aspirants in Awka

UNPRECEDENTED crowd of supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, from the 326 wards in Anambra State yesterday held Awka to a standstill during a rally organized by the leadership of the party to welcome its governorship aspirants recently cleared to go for the primaries that would produce its flag bearer for the November 16 governorship election.


Apart from Senator Andy Uba who was conspicuously absent, 11 aspirants of the party addressed the mammoth crowd that included stakeholders from within and outside the state, including the former Senate President, Senator Adolphus Wabara.

It was gathered that while the rally was going on at Ekwueme Square, Senator Uba was holding another one at the Emmaus House in another part of Awka.

The aspirants that graced the occasion include the former State Chairman of the party, Chief Tony Nwoye, who was earlier said to have been disqualified; Presidential Adviser on Technical Matters, Nze Akachukwu Nwankpo; Dr. Obinna Uzor, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, Senator Emma Anosike, Mrs. Josephine Anenih, Mr. Sylvester Okonkwo and Chief Walter Okeke. Also in attendance were Chief Ugochukwu Okeke, Chief Charles Odunukwe and Dr. Alex Obiogbolu.

Tony Nwoye,Ugochukwu Okeke, while addressing the supporters said they were not disqualified as reported by a section of the media.

However, Saturday Vanguard gathered that the Screening Appeal Panel headed by former governor of Zamfara State, Alhaji Mahmud Aliyu Shinkafi that was to meet earlier, will now meet on Tuesday with the disqualified aspirants, including the duo and others.

Addressing party supporters, the state chairman of PDP national secretariat, Prince Kenneth Emeakayi, said that the war which almost crippled PDP in the state has ended, adding that the import of the rally was to unveil the PDP aspirants to the party faithful before the ward congresses would be held on Monday.

He said that PDP would  eventually select the deputy to the governorship candidate and assured that the primaries would be free and fair.

Emeakayi also urged the national leadership of the party to convey the message from the Anambra State branch to President Goodluck Jonathan that he must fly the PDP flag for the presidency in 2015.

The aspirants were given two minutes each to talk to the crowd and they all informed the people the reason for seeking the office of governor.
