A day after the death of the imminent Islamic scholar, Sheik IsahWaziri, who held the traditional title of Wazirin Kano, officials of the Kano Emirate Council have said that the responsibility for choosing his successor is solely that of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero.

The Wazirin Kano title was adopted from the Sokoto Emirate about 200 years ago during the reign of Emir Alu, who compensated his elder brother, Ahmad, with the office after the Kano civil war

In an interview with LEADERSHIP Sunday yesterday, one of the Kano king makers, Sarkin Dawaki Mai Tuta, Alhaji Bello Abubakar, revealed that there existed a long-term relation between Sokoto and Kano emirates with the then Wazirin Sokoto customarily representing the Sultan of Sokoto at the swearing in of new emirs in the emirates under the Danfodio dynasty.

He said this significant role of the holder of the Waziri title was transferred on the elder brother of Emir Alu, the first Waziri of Kano, Waziri Ahmadu.

Abubakar explained that the appointment of Waziri has been done by several emirs including the incumbent Alhaji Ado Bayero who appointed the late Sheikh Isah Waziri after the death of his brother,Waziri Gidado.

He said that the appointment of Waziri remains the prerogative of the Emir of Kano, adding that it was initially made a royal affair, but due to the functions of the Waziri as an adviser to the emir on judicial and religious matters, the office is now occupied by Islamic scholars. The appointment of Waziri and Wali is now reserved for scholars, he emphasised.

Abubakar further said that Waziri Gidado’s family has enjoyed greater part of the appointments, stressing that about three or more members of the family held the title of Waziri, including the late Isah Waziri.
