Army nabs man for impersonating military Officer

The Nigerian Army in Onitsha on Monday arrested a man, Chinenye Nnagbogu, 26, for allegedly impersonating a military police personnel.

The Army 302 Artillery Regiment, Onitsha, Lt.-Col. John Majebi, said Nnagbodu had been presenting himself as a military police officer for the past three months.

Majebi said the alleged impostor was finally caught while extorting money from some commercial motorcycle riders plying the Onitsha-Enugu Road.

He said, “This is one of those that give the army a bad name in Onitsha. Since he was impersonating military policemen close to the cantonment gate, it will be difficult to suspect that he is not an army MP official.

“We had been on his trail for over three months now, since we received series of complaints from members of the public about his activities at various strategic locations in Onitsha.

“And we reliably gathered that he had even gone to introduce himself to the Onitsha Police Area Command officers as an army officer.’’

He said Nnagbogu would be handed over to the police for investigation and prosecution.

Nnagbogu, who claimed to be a trader, said, “I was not extorting money but I was urging the okada riders to pay their daily dues and I wear army uniform to get their cooperation.”
