President Goodluck Jonathan will on Wednesday July, 17 present the Sydney Olympic gold medal to the six quarter milers who made the country proud Down Under 13 years ago.
The presentation, according to Dr. Emmanuel Igbinosa of the National Sports Commission, will take place in the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa during the Federal Executive Council Meeting.
He urged all the five athletes to be physically present while the late member of the team, Sunday Bada who died on December 12, 2011 is to be represented.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded the gold to Nigeria that won the silver medal, following the disqualification of USA as a result of the dope infraction of Antonio Pettigrew.
After years of delay, the IOC eventually forwarded the gold medals to the Nigerian Olympic Committee for onward presentation to the winners.
Apart from Bada’s representative only Enefiok Udo-Obong is likely going to be physically present to receive the medals and whatever accompany gift from President Jonathan.
Other members of the team, Jude Monye, Clement Chukwu and Nduka Awazie are based in the United States of America while Fidelis Gadzama is resident in the United Kingdom.
Udo-Obong however told THISDAY Thursday night that he was going to get in touch with his other colleague to ensure that they are physically present to receive the medal from President Jonathan.
“This is going to be a great honour to receive the medal from the President at the Villa. I will get in touch with my other members based in the USA and England to ensure that we are present physically in Abuja. I don’t think it will be too much to send tickets to the others to come home to receive the honour,” said the Olympic gold winner Thursday night.
