As part of the efforts to ensure that Ndigbo actualise their prolonged dream of producing an Igbo President come 2015, the leadership of the newly registered political party, All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday said the people of the South-east must embrace APC to enable the region produce an Igbo President.
Speaking during the first meeting of the party in Awka, the party’s Deputy National Chairman, South, Senator Annie Okonkwo posited APC was the only platform that would give South-east the opportunity of producing an Igbo President.
According to him, there was nothing like imposition of candidate in the platform, adding, "people are saying that APC is a Yoruba/Hausa political party but today, the Igbos dominate the structure of the party. The Deputy National Chairman, South, National Woman Leader, National Organising Secretary, Welfare Officer are all Igbos."
Okonkwo who is also a governorship aspirant in Anambra, said: “APC is not a Yoruba or Hausa party. It is a party that will bring governance to the people. Today, there is hunger in the country, our children are graduating every day, no jobs for them. But today, I am promising you all that APC will salvage the people from this situation that the PDP led government has put us into.”
Also speaking, Senator Osita Izunaso who is the National Organising Secretary of the party, noted that there use to be peace in the country but today, things were turning the other way round.
In order to rescue Nigerians from the present situation, the Senator said, “The major opposition parties decided to come together.”
The first test, he said “Is starting with Anambra State governorship election and that is why we are pleading with you all to join the APC.”
The National Woman Leader of the Party, Sharon Ikeazu on her part asked: “Do we have Speaker? Do we have Senate President or do we have the President? Please I am begging you as a mother, let us start from Anambra local government election in October, everyone of us should embrace APC because it is the only party that can bring change in our country.”
