News: PDP has resolved its problems – Tukur; APC now in trouble, says Gana

THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday claimed that it has resolved all its problems and was now poised to crush the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) should it be registered to contest the 2015 general elections.

The National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur and the chairman of the PDP mini national convention planning committee, Professor Jerry Gana, stated this during a joint press briefing after a meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) and the convention planning committee at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

This is coming as it emerged on Monday that Tukur has written both Senate President, David Mark and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal to submit their nominees for inclusion in the national convention planning sub committees as a way to make it all inclusive.

The NWC and the convention planning Committee had met at the instance of President Goodluck Jonathan to resolve their differences concerning the conduct of the national convention as well as the South West zonal congresses whose dates have been disputed by both parties.

While the convention planning committee had fixed August 31 for the mini national convention and South West zonal congresses for August 24, the NWC had rejected the dates following what it considered as anomalies and breaches of the PDP constitution, which it said made the dates untenable.

Tukur said during the briefing on Monday that the issues had now been fully resolved and boasted that it demonstrated that the ruling party was working and it could solve whatever problem it was confronted with.
The party boss told newsmen: “The PDP is working with NWC on issues affecting the conduct of the special convention. I want you to meet with the PDP family in a bid to make the PDP work.

“All party faithful should know that the party is one and we are working together. The Chairman of the planning committee is saddled with a very big responsibility to make sure that the convention works.”

Also speaking, Professor Gana confirmed that the NWC and the Convention Planning Committee have resolved their differences as a testimony to the capacity of the PDP to surmount all internal problems, noting that its rivals must now be thoroughly disappointed.

He, therefore, warned that the fledgling APC was in trouble as the PDP was moving to organize as 2015 general elections approaches, adding, “I like to confirm that we just concluded a very fruitful, a very peaceful meeting with the NWC under the able leadership of our chairman and all the issues concerning planning and execution of all arrangement towards the special national convention have been fully and properly resolved.

“I think this is very clear indication that the PDP is moving to really organize and be consolidated to face 2015.

“If anybody is thinking that the PDP was in trouble I think they must be thoroughly disappointed, because the PDP will always find solution and we are so delighted such solution is found today. So, APC, you are in trouble.”

While applauding Tukur for making sure that “these matters are resolved so amicably, so peacefully, so wisely,” he paid special tribute to President Jonathan whose intervention he revealed led to Monday’s meeting between the NWC and the Convention Planning Committee.

“I think it is also in order for us together with the National Chairman, the National Working Committee and members of the Convention Planning Committee to express our profound thanks to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the leaders of our party for graciously calling a meeting yesterday, which produced this joint meeting today,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the National Chairman said that the dates of the national convention and the South West Zonal Congresses would be announced tomorrow, a day the National Planning Committee is scheduled to be inaugurated.

Also present at Monday’s meeting were Deputy Senate President and Secretary of the Convention Planning Committee, Ike Ekweremadu; former Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives, Hon. Chibudom Nwuche; Akwa Ibom Governor, Godswill Akpabio; former acting National Chairman of the PDP, Haliru Bello Mohammed; acting National Secretary of PDP, Remi Akintoye; acting National Organizing Secretary of PDP, Alhaji Hamisu Abubakar; acting National Publicity of PDP, Tony Okeke, among others.
Meanwhile, the PDP has set up a new 30-man National Reconciliation Committee headed by Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State, with Alhaji Umar Damagun as Secretary.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the acting National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Okeke, the setting up of the committee was in furtherance to the efforts to ensure comprehensive reconciliation among members and interests in the party and to harmonize all interests and achieve genuine reconciliation across board.
