News: Electoral Institute gets new DG

THE Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, yesterday, nominated Professor Abubakar Momoh as the new director-general of its electoral institute in Abuja.

A statement from the commission said Momoh’s appointment, which takes effect on August 1, 2013, is to make the institute a foremost centre of excellence and electoral training in West Africa. Abubakar Momoh, a Professor of Political Science who, until his appointment was the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Lagos State University, LASU.

Momoh, who obtained a Ph.D in Political Theory started his lecturing career in 1988 and has served on various Boards and Scientific Committees, including those of the Centre for Democracy and Development, CDD, and Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA). He has more than 70 publications to his credit.

The new DG, who was also Vice President of African Association of Political Science (AAPS), has been a researcher and lecturer at many universities across the world.
