Gossip: Woman strips naked to ward off police arrest over illicit brew

A middle-aged woman caused a stir when she stripped butt-naked and wailed uncontrollably when police attempted to arrest her at Ebubayi in Vihiga County for brewing and selling chang’aa and busaa last week.

The country-wide crackdown on illicit brews might have as well opened the proverbial Pandora’s box. Virtually all the individuals involved in the trade have either been rendered jobless, except for the few who are still playing hide and seek with the authorities.

Police had raided the home of the woman in question early in the morning during the crackdown and nabbed her in possession of several litres of chang’aa and busaa, even as her makeshift brewery churned more illicit liquor.

But just before the Administration Police officers could handcuff and, as is ritual, parade her and the paraphernalia of her trade before journalists, before pouring the fruits of her labour on the ground, before from marching her to Luanda Police Station, hell broke loose.

She took off all of her clothes and started screaming, cursing and threatening to commit suicide if we did not let go of her,” one of the officers who participated in the operation told this writer during the incident. After several minutes of hide and seek and being chased around her house, she was nabbed by the cops who did not seem the least bothered by her nakedness.

The incident attracted many people and hundreds of school-going children who were idling in the village cheered her off as she walked naked towards the police car.

One elderly woman volunteered to wrap her in her lesso wasn’t amused.

“This young women are something. Why does she expose her body to all these people?” she angrily asked as the police Land Rover sped off.
