Former IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn will be judged by a French criminal court on charges of pimping in the Carlton Hotel prostitutes’ scandal, his lawyer said on Friday.
Twelve other people will be tried along with Strauss-Kahn in connection with the alleged prostitution ring at the northern city of Lille’s Carlton hotel, the local prosecutors' office confirmed.
Known in France as the "Carlton affair", the charges centre around allegations that high-flying business leaders and police officials in Lille operated a vice ring supplying girls for sex parties, some of which are said to have taken place at the city's Carlton Hotel. The affair broke in late 2011.
In June, prosecutors had called for the charges of "aggravated pimping as part of an organised gang" against Strauss-Kahn to be dropped. Investigating magistrates have now decided the disgraced former minister should face trial.
Prosecutors in Lille confirmed that investigating judges had determined Strauss-Kahn should be judged by a criminal court in the case involving sex parties.
Strauss Kahn has already acknowledged attending but denies knowing they involved prostitutes.
Strauss-Kahn was formerly forced to quit as head of the IMF and put an end to his aspirations to become the next French president after he allegedly attempted the rape of a hotel cleaner in May 2011.
