Public outcry has greeted the increase in cases of rape of house wives by lunatics across Agbor town, Isoko communities and Asaba, all in Delta State.
Reports said the act has been on the increase in recent time, with Agbor and its surrounding towns being the worst hit. Sources fingered markets around Abavo and Agbor as the places where the ‘mad men’ operate most, as it is where they can be seen hanging around women, especially food vendors.
Leadership Friday learnt that the lunatics usually position themselves in dilapidated buildings, especially on market days, from where they trace their unsuspecting targets pounce on them. Most times, it was learnt, the screams of struggling victims have attracted other traders to the scene, but on a number of occasions, all they have done is stare.
Recently, it was reported that a ‘mad man’ was alleged to have pounced on a woman who trades in foodstuff, inside the Abavo market, after she had stooped to sell palm oil to a customer. Eyewitness said but for her co-traders who came to her rescue and “beat the mad man to pulp,” he would have had his way.
Elsewhere in Asaba, at the popular Ogbeogonogo Market, the memories of a case of rampaging mad men who allegedly raped a woman who trades in yams are yet fresh.
LEADERSHIP Friday checks revealed that the influx of destitute into the state have constantly been a worry to the state government who, through the ministry of environment, ordered them out of the streets. But this has not helped matters, as they continue to flood the state from neighbouring areas like Onitsha, in Anambra State.
Further investigation revealed that many have associated the increasing cases of madness across the state with incessant evil acts, one of which may be the raping of women – an act considered an abomination. “It could be that they raped woman when they were okay; that is why they continue to rape women, even in their madness,” said a man who resides around the Ogbeogonogo Market area, but wouldn’t give his name.
