THE TEMA Regional Police Motor Transport and Traffic Department of the Ghana Police Service is holding Nelson Opoku, a 24-year-old driver who ran over a four-year-old boy at Tema, killing the latter instantly.
The deceased, Murtala Mohammed, was said to have met his untimely death when he attempted crossing the road after Eid-Ul-Fitr prayers.
Superintendent Oduro Amenning, the Tema Regional MTTU Commander, confirming the incident to DAILY GUIDE, mentioned that last Thursday at about 1:00pm, the driver, in charge of an Albion articulated truck with registration number GR 3009 F, was travelling from the Tema Cocoa Processing Company at Site Two towards Mankoadze Roundabout.
On reaching a section of the road near the Tema Timber Market, the suspect, driving the articulated truck with a 20- footer container, ran over the 4-year-old boy who was then crossing the road.
He said the boy passed on instantly and the body had been deposited at the Tema General Hospital morgue awaiting autopsy and burial.
Superintendent Amenning further noted that the driver had been cautioned and would be charged after the docket had been referred to the Attorney General’s office for advice.
Meanwhile, the vehicle of the suspect has been impounded, with the suspect in police custody assisting with investigation.
Superintendent Amenning disclosed that the suspect was likely to be charged with careless, inconsiderate driving and negligently causing harm when he is arraigned.
He warned underage drivers to desist from driving heavy duty vehicles, urging motorists to always ensure to use the requisite licences that qualify them to drive a specific vehicle before attempting to move any such vehicle.
The Tema Regional MTTU Commander also admonished pedestrians, especially parents, to make the safety of their wards a priority whenever walking on or crossing the roads.
