Popular R ‘n’ B singer, Capital FEMI, tells Ademola Olonilua about his style in this interview.
What does fashion and style mean to you?
Fashion and style means everything. Your sense of style determines your fashion sense.
Do you think there is a difference between style and fashion?
Yes, there is a huge difference. Style is personal while fashion is general.
What influences your style?
My music influences my style. Actually, love influences my music -being an R’n’B musician – and my music, in turn, influences my style. I stick to what makes me feel stylish; it may not be a fashion norm, but as long as am comfortable and feel good. The man makes the clothes and not the other way round.
Do you patronise Nigerian designers?
Yes I do.
What is that fashion item you cannot leave home without?
A wristwatch, it completes everything.
What do you put into consideration when stepping out for an event?
The event itself; if it is a casual, corporate or in between. You have to be familiar with where you are going. That will help in picking out what to wear.
Was there any time you felt like quitting your music?
Yes, there are days you question everything, but you just keep pushing on. No winner quits. First, let me say we are still building a timeless, classic and appealing brand of the Capital FEMI but mainly finances, and sometimes logistics have been a big challenge for me.
What is the craziest thing a lady has done to you?
A lady (fan) proposed to me. It was touching though. I smiled and held her. I met her at an event, after my performance.
I felt flattered but happy that my music can have such an influence on a person.
What is your fashion weakness; is it perfumes, shoes, bracelets, and how many of these items do you own?
Perfumes and watches, they are never enough for me.
How many pairs of shoes do you own?
Let’s just say less than 20.
What is your most expensive fashion item and how much did it cost you?
One of my suits; I paid a very high amount. I don’t want to disclose the amount. It was for an award ceremony.
Would you say you were fashionable while growing up?
I thought I was at some point then. When I look back at some childhood pictures, I ask myself what was I thinking?
What was growing up like for you?
Growing up was fine; yet, it had its ups and downs. I did most of it outside Nigeria. This can take forever; being young, black and African was not easy. I was the butt of a few bad African jokes.
Do you ever have days when you feel you don’t look so good?
Yes, a barber once messed up my hair and things just turned upside down from there.
What are you currently working on?
New song, new video, new style and still the Capital FEMI feel.
What are your likes and dislikes in a lady?
Attitude. I believe a woman should have the right character and attitude. If she doesn’t possess such qualities, then I cannot be attracted to her.
How many wristwatches do you own?
I have about six wristwatches. I love wearing both the ones with chain and the ones with leather. It depends on what I am wearing though.
When it comes to wristwatches, I love them all be it an analogue or digital.
Who would you say you got your fashion sense and style from, you mum or dad?
My Dad; I am quite sure I got my fashion sense from my father.
How much can you spend on a perfume or wristwatch?
In the four-digit figure, that’s what I can spare.
