“Chineke is Involved.” In this interview with HILDA OKAFOR, he explains how he has come this far amidst so much competition in the music industry.
Who is Effizee?
My name is Ifeanyi Chukwu, the last of seven children. I am a minister of God, a child of favour from Abia State. I believe in Jesus Christ and also touching lives through my ministry.
How was growing up?
Growing up was tough but good with lots of challenges but we give God all the glory because we are alive today and where there is life, there is hope.
Who has most influenced you and how?
My pastor, Reverend Goodheart Obi Ekwueme. He believes in me so much and even when I think I cannot go far, he always tells me “Son, I am proud of you and I know you can do it”. Also, my mum who is a widow also inspires me. She has been through a lot so; I really want to help the widows.
What is it like being a gospel artiste?
I will say wonderful. Challenges are everywhere whether you are a secular or gospel artiste. As a gospel artiste, you have to work on your integrity because you are propagating God’s word and people expect so much from you. Also, you have challenges on how to produce songs that will bless lives because that is what you are called to do. Life generally is not free of challenges but,I thank God for where I am today.
What do you like most about your profession?
Doing it for God is my joy. Putting smiles on people’s faces also keeps me going.
Tell us about your new blockbuster single Chineke is Involved, what inspired the music?
Sorry, I may sound too spiritual but in the Bible, Moses said “God, if your presence will not go with us, we are going nowhere.” Chineke is Involved simply means ‘God is involved’. I have checked my life from childhood to date and realised that if not for God, I wouldn’t have been where I am today. God has been involved all the way. Despite trials and tribulations, He has never left me.
What is the side of you that the public never sees?
Laughs.I am a very good cook and a footballer. I just love trying out various dishes.
How hard do you push yourself?
It is well. My life is purely a reflection of the grace of God. Since I started in 2009, it has not been easy but the grace of God has kept me going. Most times, I don’t feel like doing it but then, I involve God. Although I will still experience struggle, it goes on smoothly.
When are you completely satisfied with your work?
When my work leaves a positive impact on people’s lives, it gives me so much joy. It is happening already. When Jaginma was released, it was a hit. Someone gave a testimony in church that he had arthritis but when the song started playing, he stood up and danced. He received his healing instantly. Also, Reverend Adlan Cruz, a pianist in the United States, listened to my song and he was like, wow! He has been feeding me with testimonies of people whose lives have been touched through my songs. I hate to see people suffering and dejected, so it gives me joy to put smiles on their faces. My highest satisfaction is when my song touches people’s lives all over the world. Ultimately, my aim is to make heaven as I want to praise God here on earth and in heaven also.
Which of your songs are you most proud of and why?
I am proud of all my songs – Chineke is Involved, Jaginma, Ten percent, Ife, Idinma. I did all of them through God’s grace.
Do you worry whether people like you for the real you or because you are Effizee?
I worry, yes. Naturally, some people want to associate with you because of your status but others will like you for the real you. Over the years, I have been able to identify those who are my real friends but all in all, likeness is likeness whichever comes, is good for me.
What would you have been doing if you were not a musician?
I wanted to study Medicine and Surgery. I would have been a medical doctor but as God would have it, I am an economist.
What is next for you?
I am presently working on the video, Chineke is Involved. It will be out very soon and will be a great video. It is a highly favoured video and people all over the world are really expectant.
Do you consider yourself a person of style?
Yes. That is my name – Effizee which means swag.
How do you relax?
I listen to music and watch musical videos a lot. They give me inspiration on how to improve on my songs.
Where do you hope to be five years from now?
By the grace of God, I must have toured the world touching lives, ministering and raising young children. I really want to invest in the younger generation. I want to help the poor, less privilege and widows. I hope to use whatever finance I get from my work to support these people.
