40 Dead bodies floating, as floods Overflow cemetery In Kano

As Kano residents count their loses at last Friday’s heavy downpour, about 40 floating bodies were found in one of the cemeteries in the metropolis. The dead bodies were found in the cemetery in Yankaba quarters, while hundreds of residents are displaced. The number of houses that caved in under the heavy rain could not be ascertained. Unofficial source said there were.

It was also gathered that two women were missing in the running waters in Hotoro quarters of the state.

Alhaji Muhammad Abdulhadi, a resident of Sallari quarters in Tarauni local government area, told our reporter that “We were just on a search and rescue mission of our two missing brothers in the surging waters.”

He said the water passing through drainages and on the open was so powerful that it can go down person and washed away houses among other heavy installations.

The rain that lasted throughout the day time flooded almost all the drainages on major city roads, forcing the water to find its way through smaller drainages and across gaps, thereby collapsing weaker houses and those on waterways.

As many roads were completely flooded, hundreds of motorists had to go through with half of their vehicles submerged in the water.

It was believed that Friday’s flooding was due to blockage of drainages or ongoing roads construction work in almost every part of the city.

Areas were considerable number of houses collapsed include Chedi, Dorayi, Naibawa, Hotoro and Kalkasara quarters.

In an effort to get details of the measures taken by the state government, the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Environment, Maryam Muhammad said that a committee on drainages was earlier inaugurated by the state government. “They are doing their work”, she said.
