Sport: Wrestling Proposes N113m for C'wealth Games

The Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) has tendered an estimated sum of N113 million to the National Sports Commission (NSC) as its budget for the Commonwealth Games, which holds in Glasgow, Scotland, next year.

THISDAY Sports exclusively scooped Wednesday that the federation has proposed that about N38 million of the costs will be devoted towards holding a training camp in Bayelsa State.

The federation is headed by Daniel Igali who won a gold medal for Canada in freesytle wrestling at the Sydney Olympics Games in 2000.

Sports Minister who is also the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bolaji Abdulahi, Thursday held a meeting with the boards of 15 of the national sports federations, to discuss their strategies and budget towards the Commonwealth Games.

The session also brainstormed on which sports are to be listed for the Games as well as those likely to be exempted.
The 20th Commonwealth Games will hold from July 23-August 3 in the capital city of Scotland.

While addressing the board members, Abdulahi dropped a bombshell concerning the status of table tennis, badminton and boxing.

He said the boards of those federations must convince the ministry why the three affected sports should be listed for the Games, considering they failed to impress at the last Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India.
