The face-off between the Kano State Governor, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso and Abuja has been traced to surreptitious attempts by some influential forces in corridors of power to stop the governor from contesting the 2011 gubernatorial election even after winning the primary, Vanguard has learnt.
Kwankwaso, who is said to have transformed Kano and built a large network of followers in the last six years of his stewardship, was among the five PDP governors, who voiced concerns over what they termed ‘the leadership style of the Peoples Democratic Party’, which was the platform on which they contested election and won.
On Monday, the five governors took their grievances to former military rulers-Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalam Abubakar in Minna and asked them to intervene in the crisis currently rocking the party.
They had earlier in the week met with ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo and the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Rotimi Amaechi apparently to give him some moral support over his political travails, which have split the state House of Assembly into two factions.
A top source close to the governor, told Vanguard, yesterday, that the three-time governor of the state was unhappy with the way he had been treated by some powerful elements at the highest level of the party and government since his decision to contest as governor and beyond.
The source, who spoke in confidence, noted that the governor had been made to feel that the dominant forces in Abuja did not want him to become governor of Kano State despite the overwhelming desire of the people of Kano to have him as their leader.
