Landlords and tenants of some streets in Matogun, Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State, southwest Nigeria, have fled their houses following incessant attacks by men of the underworld.
The latest attack occurred early today when a 10-man gang raided 10 houses in the area. Houses attacked include those on Awosemo Street, Matogun Road, Ifelodun Close and Murphy Ojoku streets.
Though no casualty was recorded during the attack, the robbers carted away phones, electronics, laptops, trinkets, cash and other household goods stolen from the residents.
P.M.NEWS gathered that this was the third time robbers would attack the community in two weeks. There was a time the hoodlums wrote to the residents of their impending visit, a resident told P.M.NEWS.
Following frequent attacks by robbers, some landlords and residents, it was learnt, have packed out of the area to escape being killed.
One of the landlords who spoke with P.M.NEWS on condition of anonymity, said robbers had turned their lives into a nightmare: “We can no longer sleep because of the fear of being attacked.
“Those who attacked us today came with guns, machetes and other dangerous weapons.
“They operated for more than three hours, going from house to house. Some residents were attacked and wounded.
“Burglaryproofs were pulled down forcefully to gain access into houses.”
Another resident of the area attributed the incessant robbery attacks on Matogun residents on lack of police presence in the area.
“Robbers operate with impunity in the area because there is no police presence.
“There is no police post and no police patrol. If we have a police post and policemen patrol the area daily, robbery attacks will be much reduced.
“We are appealing to the Ogun State government and the state Commissioner of Police to come to our aid by establishing a police post at Matogun. There should also be a constant police patrol of the area to stop the incessant attacks by robbers,” he pleaded.
