TEN Delta State communities sharing borders with Edo State, have alleged encroachment by Edo neighbours, and called for urgent intervention to avert unpleasant consequences.
The placard-carrying protesters from Umutu, Eku, Umuegwa-Abraka, Orhuarivie-Abraka, Obiaruku, Mosogar, Jesse, Owa-Abbi, Oghara and Umuaja marched to Government House in Asaba.
Chief Abel Idigu, who spoke on behalf of the communities, said: “There has been a long-standing issue about boundary adjustment between Edo and Delta states.
“National Boundary Commission had intervened in 2007, when we met with them and they asked that the status quo be maintained.
“We were surprised recently to see Edo State officials planting beacons on the affected land with armed security men. This is why we are here to inform the state government of what is happening.”
Addressing the protesters on behalf of the governor, Permanent Secretary, Directorate of Government House and Protocol, Mr. Tony Obuh, said: “I thank you for the peaceful way you have handled this boundary dispute.
“This issue is critical to you and the state government. I will advise that you put your grievances into writing to enable government handle the matter well. I promise you that government will give it urgent attention.”
