News: 2 die, 2 injured in Lagos port accident

RAGEDY struck, yesterday, at Terminal ‘C’ of Tincan Island Port being operated by Port and Cargo Handling Services Limited, when an accident claimed the life of a dockworker and left two others seriously injured.


Moses Gabriel died on the spot, while Haruna Mohammed sustained injury on the head, Ruben Ugbaji, has his leg broken.

While Ugbaji, at the time of this report, was still in an undisclosed hospital, Haruna Mohammed has been discharged.

President of Dockworkers branch of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN, Adewale Adeyaju, said: “The workers were discharging iron rods when suddenly some of them fell on the workers at 2 a.m. this morning (yesterday).

“Mr. Moses Gabriel died on the spot, Haruna Mohammed sustained injury on the head, while Ruben Ugbaji had one of his legs broken.

“As we speak, while Mohammed has been discharged from the hospital they were rushed to, Ugbaji is still at the hospital.”

Speaking to Vanguard, spokesman for the Sifax group, owners of the terminal, Mr. Oliver Omajuwa, said he was yet to be briefed on the accident, noting that he will react as soon as he was debriefed.
, he would issue a statement.

He however, added that the incident was unfortunate, noting that plans were under way to meet with the family of the deceased and ensure that the injured ones got proper treatment.

Lamenting the incident, the President of the Dockworkers said the union was concerned with the frequent industrial accidents in the terminal leading to loss of lives and called on the Nigeria Port Authority, NPA, to live up to its responsibility by ensuring that terminal operators provide the minimum safety and health as required.
