We have yet to see the end of the recent ruckus in the Deeper Life Bible Church organization over the wedding of John Kumuyi to Love Odih.
While John Kumuyi and his wife are banned from any church activity , Pastor Odih, the father of the bride and the Deeper Life Church Leader in Jamaica including his entire family have been recalled to Nigeria. That is the Church’s disciplinary actions so far taken. More heads may still roll in the unfolding drama as the church struggles to sanitize the progressive elements in the fold who are largely based outside Nigeria; especially in the USA.
The church leadership outside Nigeria has often tried to steer the church away from its original puritan and holiness base. That led to the ousting of Dr. Olu Itiola, who was the most prominent Leader of the Church in the Americans a couple of years ago. Since then, the church in the US has been Balkanized into regions without a central leadership and each leader taking the church away in different directions. The result is that some of the leaders have wedded their members, daughters and sons on the same grand scale as John Kumuyi’s wedding.
It is a well known fact that Deeper Life is a church that preaches modesty and simplicity in the conduct of wedding ceremony but the churches in America have always wedded their members the same way John Kumuyi wedded his wife in Jamaica–with all the trappings and trails. So what is the fuss about? John and his wife pointed to this fact as an alibi for why they may have flaunted the acceptable standard in Nigeria—having lived outside for so long.
