The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a consortium of six insurance companies in the country to provide insurance cover for members of the transport union and discourage patronage of fake insurance clients.
THISDAY checks revealed that the agreement on the usage of the third party insurance cover with the consortium of six insurance schemes was said to have been reached in Kaduna, Kaduna state recently.
However, in a chat with journalists in Ilorin, the National Chairman of the NURTW, Alhaji Usman Yasin, said, “It is an offence punishable with a fine of N250,000 for private and commercial motorist to possess fake group third party insurance papers”.
Yasin, who said the group third-party vehicle license insurance is backed by the Insurance Act 2003, added that genuine insurance papers would help alleviate predicaments usually faced by members of the union who may be involved in accidents.
He said fake insurance papers, apart from violating the law, have created an avenue for illegal revenue generation that found its way into private pockets of some unscrupulous individuals, thereby denying motorists, "who unfortunately incurs liability to a third party at risk of failure to discharge such obligations in form of compensation".
The NURTW boss, who said third party insurance paper is compulsory and beneficial for all members, added that liability from accidents would be taken care of if there is genuine third party insurance cover in line with the insurance Act 2003.
Also in his comment, one of the representatives of the consortium of insurance companies, Mr. Gafar Alamu, said the third party insurance scheme for commercial vehicle operators would make payment through pre-paid premium scratch cards available at the approved official banks for the exercise.
Alamu, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Royal Chambers Insurance Brokers, said, “Each state council of NURTW shall furnish and nominate an officer that will be purchasing scratch cards from the official banks”.
He added that, "in case of the event of an accident involving a third party, such person should report to the police, take a photograph, report to the officer of a state council of NURTW and obtain a claim form”.
